WILD OCEANS FILMFEST
Second edition 2 - 7 october 2023

In the second edition of Wild Oceans FilmFest held from 2 to 7 October 2023

at the BIOPARC Aquarium of Gijón, they had a place various activities, screenings and discussions.

PRESENTATION AND READING AND 

SIGNATURE OF THE MANIFESTO

During the presentation, the rich program of activities that took place from October 2 to 7 at the facilities of theBIOPARC Gijón Aquarium. This program included screenings, discussions and courses throughout the week.

It has also been presentedmanifesto “Manifesto for Ocean Conservation through Art”. A call to joint action in the fight to protect our oceans and their threatened biodiversity. It highlights the need to change the mentality of those who have been indifferent to nature and presents art as a powerful tool of transformation. Those attending the inauguration have joined the manifesto and committed to the cause.

In addition to the manifesto, the inauguration of the WOFF also marked theKiku Poch exhibition opening. This artist, whose career has been forged through decades of artistic exploration, has left an indelible mark on the art world with his deep connection to the sea.

PROJECTIONS AND COLLOQUIA

For 4 days we were able to attend several screenings that, after their completion, were completed with a discussion.

Within the activity program we were able to enjoy differentround tables by Laboratorio LUCE Gijón,

aflashtalk from El Corte Inglés and MSC and ameeting of our Education colleagues with schoolchildrenfrom IES No. 1 of Gijón

MASTERCLASS WITH JOHN JACKSON

"The responsibility of TV and cinema in conservation"

The students of the Faculty of Biology of the University of Oviedo were able to enjoy both a masterclass by JOh Jackson as well as several fragments of some of his projections.

CLEANING GIJÓN MARINA PORT

As a closing activity of the Wild Oceans FilmFest, on Saturday, October 7, a cleaning of the seabed of the Development dock of the Gijón Marina was carried out. 

 

The Bioparc Acuario de Gijón, the Puerto Deportivo de Gijón and Acciona LUCE Gijón joined forces in this joint action in which, together with volunteers, including the GEAS of the Civil Guard and underwater teams, they extracted garbage that had accumulated for years.

FASPA, Club Alpha Diving Gijón, Red Cross, Emulsa, DISCEAS and the Foundation also collaborated in this cleanup. surfrider (See here)

On Friday, October 6, 2023 at 7:30 p.m., theAwards Ceremony of the 2nd Edition of the Wild Oceans FilmFest.

Wild Oceans FilmFest held an awards galaexciting, a night intended to honor the talent of filmmakers. His works managed to capture the essence of the oceans and the importance of marine conservation. The evening, full of recognition, inspiration and celebration, featured thepresentation of trophies in 5 candidates, a tribute award and a special mention.

 

Featured awards:

 

  • Best Documentary: Soul of the Ocean. Austria, 51 min, 2022. Howard Hall Productions and Terra Mater Studios. Recognizing in it excellence in telling a story that sheds light on the beauty and challenges our oceans face.

 

  • Best Documentary Short Film: Haulout. United Kingdom, 25 min, 2022. Evgenia Arbugaeva and Maxim Arbugaev. For his ability to tell an impactful and powerful story in a short format.

 

  • Best Conservation Production: Resurrecting the Reef. Australia, 52 min, 2022. Les Gens Bien productions. For their efforts as an initiative to protect and preserve our oceans and their biodiversity.

 

  • Best Animal Behavior or Ecosystem Description: Titans of the Sea: A Family Affair. France, 50 min, 2021. Les Films en Vrac and Label Bleu Production. For its ability to capture the behaviors of marine life and the richness of marine ecosystems.

 

  • Best Young Director:Maronii. France, 5 min, 2022. llonneau Dimitri, Guitet Maxime, Plata Lucas, Nguyen Ngoc Mai, Matuszczak Guilian, Argentieri Flore, Courtel Hugo. For being a group of young filmmakers who show exceptional potential in the world of documentary film.

 

Furthermore, the jury has awarded aspecial mention for its originality and freshness, as well as its capacity for synthesis and beautiful workmanship:Mosquito Fish. United States, 2 min, 2021. Bryn Wright.

 

HeTribute Award “Saving the Oceans”” was awarded toOceania. This recognition highlights the valuable work of this organization in protecting the oceans and its tireless commitment to marine conservation. Ignacio Fresco Vanzini, senior advisor at Oceana, has collected the award, who has demonstrated an outstanding contribution to marine protection and his efforts in the fight against illegal fishing. The organization is committed to fields such as scientific research, international collaboration, and education and awareness. Its impact on the protection of the oceans, the fight against illegal fishing and the promotion of sustainable policies makes this recognition fully deserved, underlining its crucial role in the preservation of marine ecosystems worldwide.

 

The Awards CeremonyIt was hosted by the charismatic journalist and presenter Juan Pablo Carpintero.

The evening has been a memorable occasion, where the talent and dedication of filmmakers, conservationists and lovers of the sea have come together to celebrate the beauty and importance of our oceans, as well as to honor those who have dedicated their efforts to protect them and keep them.
